Kingfisher Spellings & Homework
At Harrold Primary Academy, children follow the No Nonsense Spelling programme from Year 2 to Year 6, once children have completed the Read Write inc. phonics scheme. No Nonsense Spelling supports children in learning spelling patterns and rules, statutory words, common exceptions and personal spellings. Children are taught in a 'Little-but-often' structure which allows them to revisit and review, learn new strategies and apply.
A variety of strategies are suggested so that children with different learning styles can find out what works well for them. Handwriting activities are also included, to develop muscle memory of the spelling pattern.
The series has clear progression through each year and is helpful because it splits the work for Years 3 and 4, 5 and 6 into single year groups, building on previous learning.
Suggestions for homework are adapted for children to use range of strategies, and regular tests are built into children's lessons.
Kingfisher Class bring new spellings to learn home in their spelling journals on a Monday in preparation for their weekly spelling test on a Friday.
Children in Kingfisher Class are also set Maths and English homework to support what they are learning that week in school. Children will bring home homework on a Wednesday and it is due in on the following Tuesday.
Children can access view their spellings at home by logging into their class Team with their school username and password. Teams can be accessed through the Teams app or by logging in at www.office.com and using the Teams webapp.
